The Delaware and Hudson changed forever as part of Conrail's formation. It was granted significant trackage rights over Conrail lines in order to provide a level of competition for shippers.
While this never panned out particularly well for the D&H, its trains helped contribute to the rainbow look of early Conrail and continued to add variety as Conrail evolved into its later more homogenous look.
